How To Brew Good Coffee At Home

Selecting a coffee maker is based on its features, price, brand, and personal preferences of the buyer. In order to be sure that you select the one that best suits your style, evaluate all the factors. Below are some of the common types of coffee machines:

Drip Coffee Makers

This type of coffee machines comes in 4 to 12 cups capacity. These coffee machines also come in different styles, varieties, and prices. Drip coffee makers are relatively an economical product compared with other machines. The most popular size for drip coffee makers is the 10-12 cups. However, most hotels and small families find the 4 cups model as ideal for them.

If you are buying a drip coffee machine, you may select between the glass and thermal carafe. You may also choose a style that can directly drip into a travel mug. These coffee machines are very common and some non-coffee drinkers are oftentimes using them particularly for entertaining guests.

Percolators

Percolators years ago, used to be the standard type for coffee machines. Some individuals claim that it brews richer and tastier coffee than the drip models. However, percolators come in limited designs and sizes. The typical design used by people who want to perk up their coffee are the glass type stove-top percolators.

Single-Pod or One-Cup Coffee Makers

With this type, the tea and coffee pods are arranged in a basket. The water coming from the tank drops through the pod, and then to the mug. Even if this coffee machine is fantastic for preparing clean specialty teas, coffees, lattes, and herbal beverages; the amount of beverage it produces may not be enough for a big family.

Specialty Brewers

Espresso machines that can produce flat whites, espresso, or cappuccino are usually more expensive that the regular coffee makers. These coffee machines are effective in providing the real café experience in your own home. Some units are actually very efficient to use because of their automation abilities. Among the factors that you should consider when purchasing specialty coffee machines are the serving capacity, assortment of brewing styles, size, and functions.

In fact, there are several models for these machines that you can choose from. Finding the right home appliance that suits your budget and needs can go a long way, and will not only make your mornings brighter and easier; but will also leave you a feeling of being energetic and lively after having your favorite cup of coffee.

Best Home Coffee Maker - Does It Really Make A Difference?

Does it really matter which coffee maker you use to make the best cup of coffee? Believe it or not, it actually does. Since there are so many different types of coffee drinks that people enjoy on a regular basis, there have been a lot of additions to the variety of coffee makers that are available.

Before, pretty much the only type of coffee maker that was used, was your standard coffee maker that had a decanter and you would insert a coffee filter in the top, add water and then brew your coffee. While these types of coffee brewers are still used, there have been quite a few additions to just the basic coffee pot.

One of the most popular coffee machines now is the single serve brewer. These units have made it very convenient for people when they are just wanting to make a single cup of coffee without much hassle or clean up. Even though these single serve machines have made enjoying your favorite cup of coffee so easy, the process of choosing which one is the best for you can be a little overwhelming because there are so many. So how do you decide which brewer is the best for you and does it matter?

Yes, it does matter and one of the first things you need to decide on is the type of coffee drinks that you are going to be making. Are you going to be making only coffee, or are you also looking to make espresso, lattes, cappuccino, and teas? This decision alone will help you decide on what the best unit is going to be for you. If you enjoy having different types of coffee drinks, then most likely it would be more beneficial to decide on a single serve machine that will be able to make any variety that you like whenever you want to.

There are a lot of factors that go into making a quality cup of coffee. Some of the factors include water brewing temperature, water saturation spout, the pressure valves when you are making espresso and the time that the water is able to mix with the coffee. These are just a few of the factors that make each coffee brewer different and therefore is what makes the quality and taste of the coffee different depending on which machine you are using.

Today, many people will have a couple different coffee makers to use, so they are able to make the amount of coffee that is needed. If you are entertaining friends & family, then it might be better to use a larger coffee maker so you are able to make larger quantities of coffee all at once. However, if for example you are just going to be making coffee for yourself after dinner, then it would then make more sense to use your single brewer so you are not wasting a pot of coffee.

If you take some of these recommendations into consideration and look at how you are going to be using your coffee maker the most, then you will be able to get a better idea of what unit will most likely work the best for you.

Coffee: A Tale of Two Origins

According to much research and study, coffee came to us a little before 1,000 A.D.. As with most popular historical products, stories abound of its origins and life before the 21st century.

Two apocryphal tales that come to mind were about a goat herder and a vanquished people sent to live in the desert.

First, the goat herder, this guy must have had guts, or maybe fewer brain cells, whichever, I can't imagine me doing this, how about you?

Well the herder of goats in the middle east was sitting in his field, watching his flock. It seemed to strike him as odd that his goats seemed more active and healthy as they grazed on the berries of this particular pasture and since the herder, personally feeling more listless and less energetic decided that his goats must have run across a good idea, by eating these berries of this unknown tree.

Here's where the stupid, or brilliant part (depending on your leaning) comes: The goat herder decides he'll partake of the same berries as his charges and starts to eat them.

Low and behold, the story goes, he was overtaken by a spark and energy, never felt before. Well sir, that convinced him, then and there, he started eating those very same berries as his goats and then proceeded to tell all his friends and neighbors about his good fortune, which enticed them to all take a lesson and eat those energy-producing berries, themselves and to grow their own trees of these wonderful berries.

Well, that's one man's telling of the origins of our favorite drink (not mine, necessarily, but one, all the same). Now then for the vanquished people, sent to the desert to die!

Along the same timeline, a people, in the middle-east were sent out into the desert with no food or drink to die, by a victor, they'd lost a battle to. After several days of wandering, prostrating and kwetching and knashing of teeth, not to mention their lack of water or food, they came upon a bush bearing an unknown berry.

With no hesitation, they took the fruits of the bush and began to boil it down to a liquid that they passed to their brethren and drank and were miraculously saved by its ingestion. To say the least they were overjoyed and thankful for this un-named fruit, so when they were refreshed enough to proceed to the nearest village, its name was Mocha and so as a tribute to this nutritious berry, they named their miracle "elixer", Mocha!

These two tales, while they may be apocryphal, could be true, and even if they're not, you have to admit they make a good telling on a cold night, smelling the aroma brewing from your favorite beverage, just starting to percolate in your new machine.

Remember these are two out of maybe thousands of possible origins of this wonderful drink. It takes time to brew your next cup, or pot, try researching, or writing your own version to comfort your waiting time!

Coffee Drinking - Does It Cause Stomach Problems?

As I have grown older I have come to appreciate the qualities of a good cup of coffee. I also have come to realize that I must drink coffee in moderation. Typically I can only drink a cup or two at the most. If I drink any more than that I sometimes tend to have an upset stomach and get the dreaded jittery feeling. That is not desirable, but I believe anyone can enjoy coffee, the key being moderation.

Sometimes the amount of caffeine in coffee can contribute to an upset stomach. If you are finding that you get an upset or jittery stomach after drinking that morning cup of Joe, thinking about going with a light roast or blend of coffee. A coffee that is very light, such as a cinnamon roast, is a great place to start drinking coffee. The heavier and darker roasts, are much stronger and can contribute to tummy troubles.

Another great idea for drinking a lighter version of a coffee, is to order a specialty drink. Drinks such as frappuccinos, mochas, lattes, and cappuccinos may be the perfect idea for starting off slowly. The key is to not order something too strong. If you are ordering a latte often times they will ask how many shots of espresso you want, and if you are looking for something light and weaker, order only one shot. Also something sweet and decadent such as a frappuccino or frozen mocha is delicious, and also a great way to get just a hint of coffee in your morning drink.

One of my favorite drinks is a Chai tea latte. It is actually a tea with a blend of delicious spices in it to give it an exotic feel. One thing I like to do is order a Chai tea and add a shot of espresso. This is known in the barista world as a "Dirty Chai". The great thing about a Dirty Chai is it is light, spicy and with just a single shot of espresso, it gives you that coffee kick, without the dreaded jitters or upset stomach! This is my favorite drink and I order it often.

So if you are looking for some coffee, without all the jitters and tummy woes, think about ordering outside of the box, and not just that plain old cup of Joe. After a little experimenting and trying new things, that great cup coffee is right around corner!

Saving Money With Coffee Coupons

If you're anything like me, you are always looking for ways that you can save some more money on the items that you buy all the time. Consumable products that you use every day - things like toothpaste, shampoo, and coffee - can cost you a lot of money if you aren't careful about watching the price. Those pennies can add up.

However, once clever way to be able to still indulge yourself in the best quality products that money can buy without breaking the bank is to use coupons.

Yes, coupons can take some time and work to find, save, and utilize - but it's very much worth the extra time and effort it costs you!

Let's look at coffee as an example. Anyone who knows about coffee, and especially people who love coffee so much they drink it every day, will tell you that there is a huge difference in taste, texture, and after-taste when it comes to comparing cheap, low quality coffee to expensive high quality coffee. There really is no comparison, truth be told. The gourmet coffee will win hands down, every time, even in blind taste tests - even when the people doing the comparing don't know a lot about the ins and outs of coffee!

However, as anyone who has ever bought gourmet coffee on a regular basis can tell you, it can add up quickly in terms of cost. At anywhere from $12 to $20 for just one small bag of coffee beans or coffee grounds, you can imagine how much gourmet coffee devotees can spend in just one single year on coffee, when you compare that price to the $5 price tag that accompanies giant tins of off brand coffee in big box warehouse stores. The quality makes it hard to give up on great quality coffee, but the price makes it hard not to!

The great thing is, there is a solution to this dilemma - coffee coupons. By making use of coffee coupons, you can strike a fantastic compromise: you can still enjoy the delicious, robust coffee that you love, but you can also get a great deal on the price, so that you don't feel guilty about indulging.

After all, coffee really is more than just an indulgence. It's one of the great pleasures in daily life. You should enjoy it to its fullest potential, without being distracted by the thought of the cost. Luckily, coffee coupons allow you to do exactly that.

What Is Sustainable Coffee And How Does It Make A Difference?

Most people drink coffee that comes from non-sustainable or traditional coffee farms. The only one who really profits from those beans are the giant corporations that focus on quantity, not quality and increasing their bottom line to make a stock owners happy. The result is growing methods that harm the earth: Rainforests with hundreds of rare animals and exotic plants have been clear cut by these global companies to make room for their factory farms. Forests that do survive the clear cutting are slowly killed as toxic chemicals leach into the soil and water. Plus, these traditional growing methods are literally making the people growing and harvesting the beans for my favorite beverage sick. To top it all off, this coffee can leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

A sustainable coffee farm is the complete opposite. A sustainable farm uses only as much from the land as it gives it. These farmers use renewable resources as much as possible, work to reduce air and water pollution, take care of the surrounding nature and make sure their employees are treated well.

But what does that really mean?

An example of using a renewable resource is using discarded coffee husks for heating, rather than cutting down trees. If that isn't an option and trees have to be cut down, new ones would be planted to replace them.

Sustainable farms reduce water pollution by making sure that fermentation tanks that process the coffee cherries don't drain into near by lakes and rivers. Instead the water is re-used on the farm to water the trees and naturally filtered by the soil.

To avoid using chemicals like fertilizers, a farm would use natural fertilizers and organic material under the coffee trees to replace the natural nutrients that coffee farming uses. It even leads to a larger harvest over time.

These coffee farms don't clear cut the forests to make room for their crops. Instead the coffee trees become part of the natural environment. The farmers use methods like bio-diversification, organic farming, sustainable agricultural and shade-grown to give back to nature as much as they're using.

Sustainable farming isn't just environmental differences. It also includes education programs, medical care for the farmers, their families and employees, as well as fair wages and working conditions for the farm's staff.

Sustainable coffee is a long term solution to much of the environmental and social issues that plague the coffee growing regions across the world.

Cold Coffee Recipes

Some of my favorite recipes include the use of cold coffee! Coffee is used in a variety of not only sweet, but also savory foods. As I use cold coffee quite often I like to keep a pitcher of it in my fridge at all times. Today I will discuss a few of the different ways you can use cold coffee at home to liven up a drink or meal, and how to prepare it!

My favorite way to use cold coffee, is in an iced coffee drink. I like to brew extra strong pots of coffee and cool them down in the fridge. I keep the strong coffee on hand for when I feel like drinking an iced coffee, or for something for sweet and decadent a Vietnamese iced coffee or a Thai iced coffee. These are wonderful for a hot summer day and for offering to guests and family as a sweet treat.

Another way to make use of cold coffee is to brew it the old fashioned way. That is simply taking coffee grounds and soaking them in water overnight. Once the coffee has steeped, you simply take cheesecloth to strain the coffee from the grounds. You can then pour the strained coffee in pitcher and keep it in the fridge. The key to making this is to make it stronger than you usually would.

One of the my popular treats you can make is a java smoothie or Frappuccino. These drinks are all the rave at the local coffee shops, and are very simple to make at home. Instead of spending, $5 or $6 on a drink at the local Starbucks, you can make it at home for pennies! Having the cooled brew helps to keep the drink nice and sweet. After adding the cooled coffee, ice, and desired sweeteners, such as chocolate syrup, you simply blend until you have reached the desired level. This is a great treat to indulge in on a special occasion, date night, or even a Monday morning!

Another great reason why you would want to keep this on hand is if you enjoy baking. One of the best chocolate cake recipes I have ever tasted, a decadent chocolate cake, involves pouring in a cup of cooled coffee. The extra strong brew makes the perfect background for a gourmet and decadent chocolate cake. I think like to use some ground espresso in the icing to tie the coffee and chocolate flavors together.

5 Negative Effects of Coffee on the Body

Coffee is such an integral part of so many lives that most people don't even want to think the negative effects of coffee on the body. Many of us rely on that morning cup of coffee to wake up and kick start the day. Others depend on it in the afternoon to get over the 2 o'clock slump. 1) Increases heart rate and blood pressure.

Excess coffee is not good for those who have heart conditions. Any type of heart problem can be affected by caffeine, and in high doses, it can even cause irregular heartbeats in healthy people.

2) Can cause dehydration.

Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it causes the body to eliminate more urine. If the water loss is not replaced, it can cause dehydration. If you choose to drink coffee, you should drink a cup of water along with it to keep yourself hydrated.

3) Exacerbates stomach conditions.

Fair Trade Coffee Standards

A lot of fuss is made about fair trade coffee and if you coffee from Starbucks for instance then you are likely to be made well aware by a lot of hardly-subtle advertising and marketing that the coffee you are drinking is fair trade and that is a good thing. But what does it all mean? What is fair trade? Here we will look at the answer to that question and why it's such a good idea to use fair trade coffee whenever possible.

Fair trade coffee of course means that the coffee you are drinking is fair. But fair to whom you may wonder? Well of course the answer is that it is fair to the countries and the individuals selling the coffee beans. Of course the coffee you drink is not as a rule grown over here and most of what you drink will be imported in from third world countries.

This coffee is a very important export for those countries and it is one of the only ways that they can make some income, but unfortunately a lot of corporations over here take advantage of them by paying very low prices. Of course as those countries aren't very well off this then means that they will take what they can get, and this helps keep profits high and overheads low for those businesses. The problem is that this then of course means those countries don't get any richer and that they never pay off their debt. The fact that people are working incredible hours over there just to earn enough to give their children hardly-clean water doesn't seem to matter to some of these big organizations.

That's where fair trade coffee comes in which basically says that the companies will pay a good rate for that import. It's still relatively low, but for the workers in those countries the difference is huge and it's a lot fairer. If you buy coffee that says 'fair trade' on it, then you can rest assured that the guy at the bottom of the pyramid is getting a better cut of your money.

But this has other benefits of course as well. For one it means that those farmers etc can now start to ask for higher prices for their coffee from other companies - because they have another option. And of course it's good for the companies like Starbucks because it means that they can market the fact that they sell fair trade which will encourage more people to choose their coffee over the competition which does not necessarily. And at the same time it allows the person drinking that coffee to feel better about themselves.

On top of all this though fair trade coffee also often means various other things - for instance it tends to mean the coffee is harvested using sustainable methods - in other words it's not going to run out and meaning that the environment is taken into account contributing less to things like global warming.

Some Unusual Date Ideas

Are you fed up with taking your date to the same places? There gets a time when you want to go somewhere different on your date, whether it's a first date or not. Over time you can get bored of going to the same restaurants and bars, which can have an impact on the successfulness of the date. It's not just who you're with that affects the date, where you go and what you do also plays a huge part. Why not try something more exciting? That doesn't necessarily mean more expensive; you can still do something more unusual without overspending. All you need is a great idea and some preparation.

Before you decide what to do, it helps if you know a bit about your date. That way you can judge if you think they'll like your idea. If you don't want to start out too adventurous why not arrange a day at the zoo or aquarium. Walking around talking about the animals ensures you won't run out of things to say. If the weather is nice you could always plan a day at the beach. Lying on the beach listening to the waves, having a picnic and eating an ice cream can be very relaxing. A day at your local park can be just as relaxing too. Why not take some card games with you to enjoy together while you're there or you could even take some roller skates or a kite. These are great ways to behave like a kid again and really enjoy yourself.

If you want to be more creative, you could suggest an art class. There's nothing stopping you going to the countryside with your paper and pencils and sketching the scenery. You could even try drawing each other. Even if art isn't your speciality, you can have fun doing it, plus you'll have a souvenir of the date.

An evening at a comedy club or seeing a musical are great alternatives to the cinema. Laughter is a great way to break the ice, especially on a first date, so a comedy club is a good idea if you're feeling a bit apprehensive. If those ideas don't appeal to you, you could visit to a planetarium or perhaps the circus. These will certainly give you something to discuss afterwards and will be a date you won't forget in a hurry.

If you wanted your date to be more physical, why not try indoor rock climbing, go karting, paint-balling or even white water rafting? These are quite adventurous ideas, so it might help if you know how your date would feel about these before you make any arrangements.

If you want to plan something unique, why not arrange a hot air balloon ride. It's not the cheapest date idea, but it's certainly unusual and very romantic. Unless your date is petrified of heights, it will be a date to remember.
